Q & A: The Mawlid-un-Nabi

By Shaykh Fakhruddin Owaisi al-Madani

Q1: What is the ruling (hukm) regarding celebrating the Mawlid-un-Nabi?

A1: Any action we do may be judged by the Shari ah as being of one of the following
five categories:

  • Fard (Obligatory)
  • Mustahabb (Recommended)
  • Mubah/Ja iz (Simply Permissible)
  • Makruh (Discouraged)
  • Haram (Forbidden)

Past and present Ulama from the four Madhabs (Hanafi, Shafi, Maliki and Hanbali) have considered the commemoration of the Prophet (salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) birth as being Mubah, i.e. permissible, as there is no evidence in the Shari ah that prohibits such an event. In fact, there is some evidence that actually supports the commemoration of the noble birth. For example:

- Allah says in the Qur’an:
“Say in the Bounty of Allah and His Mercy, Let them rejoice.” (Surah Yunus, verse 58).

There is no greater bounty given to creation than the Holy Prophet (salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).

The Adhan of Madina

Abu Yusuf said to Malik, “You do the adhan with tarjih, but you have no hadith from the Prophet about this.” Malik turned to him and said: “Subhan Allah! I have never seen anything more amazing than this. The call to prayer has been done (here) every day, five times a day, in front of witnesses, and sons have inherited it from their fathers since the time of the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa salam. Does this need “So-and-so from so-and-so”? This is sounder (asahh) in our opinion than hadith.

When Imam Malik was Stung by a Scorpion

The Muhaddith, Abdullahi Ibn Al-Mubarak رحمه الله said:

“I was with Imam Malik رحمه الله while he was relating Hadith to us and a scorpion stung him ten times. Malik changed color and grew ashen, but he did not interrupt the hadith of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله وصحبه وسلم

When the people left him,

I said ‘I have seen something wondrous from you today.’” he mentioned the story and Malik said, “I was not steadfast out of fortitute, but out of respect for the Hadith of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله وصحبه وسلم .”

{Bustan al-Muhaddithin}

The great scholar of Madinah and son in law of the Sahabi ===> Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه,

Sa’id bin al-Musayyab رحمه الله said:

“I used to travel days and nights to only get one Hadith.”

The Guiding Helper on the Beard and Moustache

“It is wajib for men to refrain from shaving the hair on their jaw bone (by passing a blade or razor over the skin). [The beard in the Arabic language is the hair on the two bones that hold the upper and lower teeth.] However, they may trim this chin hair if they wish.”

“It is mandub to keep the beard from getting too long. The beard is too long if it reaches the lower chest when the man is in an upright posture.”

“It is unlawful to completely shave the moustache hair over the lip (since it is part of the beard in the Arabic language); however, one may cut it very short.”

[The Guiding Helper, commentary of song 36 / p. 242]

Virtues of Dhul-Hijja

It is narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas (radiya Allahu ‘anhu) that the Prophet (salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“There are no days in which righteous deeds done in them are more beloved to Allah than these days (i.e. the ten days of Dhul-Hijja). They said: O Messenger of Allah, not even Jihad in the path of Allah? He said: Not even Jihad in the Path of Allah, the Most High, except if a man goes out (for Jihad) with his self and his wealth, then he doesn’t return with anything from that.”

(Al-Bukhari, Abu Dawud and others. The exact wording is that of Abu Dawud)
