Imam Sufyan At-Thawri {716–778} said:

“I know that a man loves this life when I see him greet its people often!”

{Hilyatul-Awliyah, Volume 7, pg. 37}

Meaning: When one wants to be in the limelight, known to all.


Place of Birth: Kufa, Iraq

Converted to Sunni Islam by Shaykhs Abdallah ibn ‘Awn and Ayyub as-Sakhtiyani.

1} Imam Sufyan ath-Thawri رحمه الله is part of a group that the scholars of Islam call the ‘8 Ascetics.

2} Shaykh Amir ibn Abd al-Qays,

3} Shaykh Abu Muslim al-Khawlani,

4} Shaykh Uways al-Qarni,

5} Shaykh ar-Rabi ibn Kuthaym,

6} Shaykh Al-Aswad ibn Yazid,

7} Shaykh Maruq ibn al-Ajda and

8} Imam Hasan al-Basri.
