A beautiful reminder from the spiritual master – Imam Ali b. Abi Talib, Alah be well pleased with him:
I will Inform you of one of the Messenger of Allah’s ﷺ favorite Verses of the Quran,
وَمَا أَصَابَكُم مِّن مُّصِيبَةٍ فَبِمَا كَسَبَتْ أَيْدِيكُمْ وَيَعْفُو عَن كَثِير
It is, “And whatever disaster hits you, it is because of what your own hands have set forth; but (know) that He [Allah] pardons much.” (Quran, 42:30)
Imam Ali, then said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited Chapter 42 from the Quran in front of us and he said:
O! Ali! I shall tell you the interpretation of this Verse:
“In this world, the sickness or problems you face are the due punishment which comes to you because of that which you did to yourselves by your own (destructive) actions.
This happens because Allah is so Generous that He would rather hold you to account here in this world, instead of having to punish you for all of it on the Day of Judgement again.
And When Allah forgives you in this World, this is because He is the One who gives so much Respite, that he would not forgive here in this world, to then punish you again and again on the Judgement Day for it.”
