Abu Yusuf said to Malik, “You do the adhan with tarjih, but you have no hadith from the Prophet about this.” Malik turned to him and said: “Subhan Allah! I have never seen anything more amazing than this. The call to prayer has been done (here) every day, five times a day, in front of witnesses, and sons have inherited it from their fathers since the time of the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa salam. Does this need “So-and-so from so-and-so”? This is sounder (asahh) in our opinion than hadith.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Sa’id that Sa’id ibn al-Musayyub said, “Ibrahim, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was the first to give hospitality to the guest and the first person to be circumcised and the first person to trim the mustache and the first person to see grey hair. He said, ‘O Lord! What is this?’ Allah the Blessed, the Exalted, said, ‘It is dignity, Ibrahim.’ He said, ‘Lord, increase me in dignity!’” (Imam Malik’s Muwatta Book 49, Hadith # 49.3.4)

Yahya said that he had heard Malik say, “One takes from the mustache until the edge of the lip appears, that is the rim. One does not cut if off completely so that one mutilates oneself.” And this is why one should not shave the mustache as Imam Malik was asked about the person who completely shaves his mustache, he said that he sees that he should be beaten up, he also said that this is an innovation that appeared among the people. [Narrated by al-Baihaqi, also mentioned in Fath al-Bari, 10/347].

“I was with Imam Malik رحمه الله while he was relating Hadith to us and a scorpion stung him ten times. Malik changed color and grew ashen, but he did not interrupt the hadith of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله وصحبه وسلم

When the people left him,

I said ‘I have seen something wondrous from you today.’” he mentioned the story and Malik said, “I was not steadfast out of fortitute, but out of respect for the Hadith of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله وصحبه وسلم .”

The great scholar of Madinah and son in law of the Sahabi ===> Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه,

Sa’id bin al-Musayyab رحمه الله said:

“I used to travel days and nights to only get one Hadith.”

Imam Yusuf Ibn `Abd al-Barr al-Andalusi رحمه الله said that Imam Malik was the first who compiled a book formed exclusively of sound narrations.

Qadi Abu Bakr رحمه الله said:

“The Muwatta’ of Imam Malik رحمه الله is the first foundation and the core, while Imam al-Bukhari’s book is the second foundation in this respect. Upon these two all the rest have built, such as the Sahih of Imam Muslim رحمه الله and the Jami’ of Imam at-Tirmidhi رحمه الله .”

Imam Malik رحمه الله said,

“My mother would dress me up in the clothes of the scholars while I still was a young boy and she would tell me, ‘Go to the Masjid and seek knowledge from Imam ar-Rabiʿah رحمه الله , study his manners before you take from his knowledge.’”

Imam al-Shafi’i (rahmatullahi ‘alayhi) said,

“Knowledge is encompassed by three people: Malik bin Anas, al-Laith bin Sa’ad and Sufyan bin ‘Uyaina.”

“When the scholars of knowledge are mentioned, Imam Malik is the guiding star.”

Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal (rahmatullahi ‘alayhi) said,

“I have compared Imam Malik to al-Awza’i, Hammad, al-Hakim, al-Thawri, al-Laith, in knowledge, but he is the leader in Hadith and Fiqh.”

Imam Sufyan bin ‘Uyaina (rahmatullahi ‘alayhi) said,

“May Allah have mercy upon Imam Malik. He only narrated authentic Hadith, he would never report except from the reliable. In my opinion, Madina without him, has only had a decrease in knowledge after his demise.”
